Call it ‘Bollyachi’? This chapter admittedly came out of having five classic Bollywood film tracks and five Mexican folk & mariachi tunes in the Anthology; I decided to do some creative fusion and make them share a set. But these antipodal cultures work shockingly well together, with songs that are performative and dramatic but deeply felt. The songbirds in Flor de Toloache hold a note like they’re spinning plates, while Lata Mangeshkar pleads for her true love on “Pyar Kiya To Darna Kiya”’s beguiling solo.
