Music doesn’t get more transporting than this opening trio of all-timer ballads - close your eyes and the Technicolor picture fills right in. The rest of these songs are no slouch either, showcasing the synchronized peaks and forlorn valleys of early showtunes. Maybe it’s because this was an era when nearly all music was performed live, but musical storytelling has never sounded so natural since. Perhaps folks just broke into song all the time back then.
