Chapter 51: Come Back Baby

60s R&B

The 50s as a discrete pop music era lasted until roughly 1964, when the drugs kicked in and everything changed. This can give music from the first few years of the 60s a twilight feel, the waning of a more innocent era that stubbornly refused to break. The elegiac mood benefits songs like “At Last” and “Stand By Me,” ideal selections for the end of a wedding, and adds urgency to “Cry Baby,” especially those agonizing final beats. A change is gonna come, indeed.
