A hard to categorize set, mostly due to four tracks from uncategorizable weirdo king Tom Waits. Each one captures a different side of his persona, but special attention is due “Christmas Card” from his underrated 70s period, a masterpiece of lyrical portraiture. The other songs here likewise do a lot with a little (the ultra-minimalist “Honey Pot”), or embody Waitsian charismatic tramps and grifters - listen to how Robert Preston finds the music in talking really, really well.
