Here is music for everyone: rock at its most communal, grand universal statements played to the cheap seats. Songs that mean something unique to millions, who nonetheless know they’re part of a continuum of shared experience. U2 are the masters of this expanse; they have a leader who’s both megalomaniacal and empathetic, someone who *really* cares, paired with innovative collaborators like The Edge and Brian Eno who can conjure his vision. “The Mercy Seat” is the odd song out in this set, too macabre to be for everyone, but Nick Cave’s vivid struggle with his mortality is certainly universal.
