The post-Napster peak of music piracy foreshadowed today’s celestial jukebox era; it was the moment when the walls between genres and scenes began to tumble. Case in point: the bands in this chapter, pulling from ska, disco, soft rock and funk for a big-tent, big-hearted vision of indie rock. Arcade Fire exemplified this moment, an arty multinational six-piece band writing songs that could soundtrack movie trailers, but scan as 100% sincere. Even an unusually reflective Anthony Kiedis joins in here with one of the Peppers’ most stirring, underrated songs.
