It’s been a welcome thrill to see rappers embrace singing in recent years. I love interesting vocalists, guys like Geddy Lee and Morrissey who don’t have the polish or range of a pop diva, but sing with instantly recognizable character. Emo-rap and sung rap has brought us a treasure trove of fascinating voices, from the exuberant yelps of Young Thug to the earthy trills of Post Malone. It's a gut punch, then, that some of the most arresting rappers in this chapter, expressive superstars like Lil Peep and Juice WRLD, passed before fulfilling their potential.
