There’s some exceptional hi-hat work in this set: careful and probing on “TNT,” gushy and textured on “Crusoe Takes A Trip,” the steady line pulling “Velasquez” across oceans of negative space. Artists like Tortoise and Thundercat brought jazz into the modern era by learning new ways to improvise, jamming in the studio to combine material from different sessions, applying disorienting effects and teasing individual elements into stark new contexts.
