So dramatic! I was never into emo as a teen, and quietly disdained the emo kids as kind of ridiculous - but as an adult, I can appreciate emo as an outlet for confusing emotions, an antidote to toxic masculinity as well as a life raft for legions of teen girls. There’s a lot going on underneath the surface, too: the poignant storytelling of Against Me!, the sly humor of Panic! At The Disco, and the apocalyptic thrills of Sunny Day Real Estate. “Seven” sounds like the walls are closing in, in the best way. And how many bands could pull off the psychotic ending of “The Shame”?
