The seismic switch from 1999 to 2001 wasn’t just numerical; the one-two punch of Bush v. Gore and 9/11 unmoored a complacent America, and we’ve never really recovered. Who better to carry the pop torch in an increasingly cartoonish world than a cartoon band? Gorillaz transcended gimmickry because they mirrored global fear and insanity (in the John Carpenter-esque terror of “Stylo” and the forced laughter on “Feel Good Inc.”) Perhaps this is heady talk for this cotton candy chapter, but even “Walkin’ On The Sun” feels prescient these days.
