Dividing 3010 songs into 301 well-defined chapters is hard! I was bound to end up with a jank chapter or two, and this is the jankiest - there’s no strong thread running through this set, but every song here is indeed solid gold. “The Way We Get By” is a modest, flawless indie gem from a discography littered with them. “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” is a children’s song written with adult sophistication and grace. And “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” is one of the great star-making singles, from a star who’s always insisted there’s more to her than beauty and bling.
