Few chapters in the Anthology are as pleasing on a basic sonic level as this collection of Southern hip-hop. The sound is fundamentally relaxed; smooth, syrupy flows, riding over slick hi-hats and blankets of layered samples as tasty as sweet tea. (And sometimes you get a curveball like a Mad Men quote???) This stylistic unity makes any deviation really pop, as when Outkast revs up the tempo for the stunning “B.O.B,” or teams with UGK to show some vulnerability on the modern wedding classic “Int’l Players Anthem.”
