In the 17 years since it was released, I’ve never seen a song hit the culture like “Hey Ya.” Radio played it on repeat; my mom had to pull the car over to finish listening the first time she heard it. Was the draw the ingenious pseudo-11/4 time signature, the instantly memed breakdown, or the sheer electricity of Andre’s performance? All of these songs have a similar immediacy, between the heart-on-sleeve “Delilah”, “Hollaback Girl”’s cheerleader chic, and Lady Gaga’s breakthrough single, as a punster still trying to hide her naturally goofy energy by being cooler than cool (ice cold).
