The radically minimalist beats in this chapter only seem easy to produce - there’s a precision to the drum programming and attention to timbral detail that elevates producers like DJ Mustard and Hit-Boy over the pretenders. (Even the comparatively amateurish “Crank That” works thanks to Soulja Boy’s charisma and crowd-pleasing instincts.) The simplicity of this style is hypnotic, but also puts extra pressure on MCs to carry the track; Clipse is more than up to the task on “Grindin’,” bringing just the right level of sinister confidence to an iconic, audacious Neptunes beat.
