“Paid In Full” is an incredible prank on not only Eric B and Rakim’s listeners, but their record company. They express their desire to get paid, Rakim delivers just one (masterful, era-defining) verse, then they count their money, peace out and let the beat play for a full minute and a half. “Paper Thin” pulls a similar move, MC Lyte spitting furiously for half the track, then letting the second half function as a victory lap. The triumph on these lightning-in-a-bottle singles is well earned, as is the closing street wisdom of “The Ghetto.”
