The British have a natural affinity for sarcasm and deadpan, their accent making every joke sound serious. In that vein, many of these Britpop songs are clearly taking the piss, but the panoramic production elevates them into majestic epics. “Song 2” is a parody of grunge that’s also one of the best grunge songs ever. “This Is Hardcore” is a melancholy masterpiece about shooting a porno. Even the mopey bastards in Radiohead make anxiety feel like a blast on “Paranoid Android.” Only “Common People,” ostensibly the jokiest song here, no longer sounds so funny.
