The late 90s were just a stellar era for indie rock, coming after a post-grunge major label interest in alternative sounds got weirdos like Wayne Coyne and Elliott Smith paid, but before Garden State, the commoditization of ‘indie’, and the creeping irrelevance of guitar bands. Speaking of, Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse does things with his guitar I’ve never heard before or since, twisting his riffs into rusty, gnarled darts. It’s impossible to believe, when listening to “Doin’ The Cockroach” or the Sugar rush of “Helpless,” that rock could ever become a spent force.
