When curating the Anthology I’ve typically picked from among each artist’s most popular songs to represent them; more often than not, the big hits were hits for good reason. But sometimes I can’t resist slightly deeper cuts, as on this set of KROQ classics. Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness” didn’t break mainstream the way “The Middle” did, but it’s a more interesting song with that distinctive stop-start rhythm. And Tragic Kingdom is loaded with highly singable hits, but “Excuse Me Mr.” is a barrelling jam, worth including for its ska-meets-Dixieland bridge alone.
