The film Garden State both made and destroyed The Shins, by building the impossible expectation that songs like “New Slang” would literally change your life. The thing is, it’s only a slight overstatement. “New Slang” is unforgettable, introverted but gorgeous - and by 2001, bands like The Shins, Sleater Kinney and The New Pornographers were perfecting an open-hearted catharsis that mainstream rock had mostly abandoned. No, I don’t really get what “The Bleeding Heart Show” is about, but just try to make it to that final crescendo without being forever moved.
