Chapter 56: Tossin' And Turnin'

60s pop, R&B

This chapter contains one of my more counterintuitive choices in the whole Anthology: leaving off Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep Mountain High” in favor of “I Idolize You.” Phil Spector considers “River Deep” his best work - I disagree Phil, and also you’re kind of a psycho! I much prefer Tina’s rawer early 60s voice. Also here is some killer falsetto R&B from The Larks and Lou Christie, a beautiful fake-out intro on “Quarter To Three,” and by some measures the most popular single of all time, Chubby Checker’s “The Twist.”
